Experiencing the third year of the Covid-19 pandemic, life of Vietnamese is returning to a new normal status with the heavy impacts on physical and mental health that Covid-19 left behind. After recovering from Covid-19, many patients have experienced persistent symptoms. Research results show that 33%-76% of patients may experience post-COVID-19 symptoms lasting at least 6 months after infection, 20% of patients have to be re-hospitalized; 80% of patients must be followed up at a primary care facility within 2 months of discharge(1). Fear of being infected with Covid-19, or re-infection with Covid-19 due to the unpredictable complexity of new variants, or even other future pandemics, all greatly affect human health.

The best way to protect your health is to take care of both the physical and mental heath which help the body firmly overcome all difficulties. Let’s find out some simple but effective solutions to help strengthen physical and mental health during the Covid-19 period.

1/ Warning signs of physical and mental health decline

Anxiety, sleeping difficuties, fatigue, headache, dizziness, poor concentration, decreased work productivity, even depression or irregular eating, loss of appetite, feeling of loss of strength, poor immunity … are all signs that your body is physically and mentally impaired.

2/ Some diseases related to physical and mental health decline

  • Post-Covid-19 syndrome(1): occurs in individuals with a history of infection with symptoms and persists for at least 2 months that cannot be explained by an alternative diagnosis.

There are about 200 symptoms associated with the post-COVID-19 syndrome, the most common being fatigue, shortness of breath and cognitive dysfunction causing brain fog (memory impairment, inability to concentrate).

There are also mild fever, difficulty breathing, prolonged cough, digestive disorders (loss of appetite, loss of appetite, stomach pain, diarrhea…), taste or smell disturbances, rash…. Or neuropsychiatric symptoms such as psychological disturbances, anxiety, depression, restlessness, sleep disturbances

  • Fatigue(2): is also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) which is characterized by persistent extreme fatigue for at least 6 months, that cannot be explained by an underlying disease and is not relieved by rest.

The syndrome occurs at all ages in men and women in which women are often affected more than men and the age group 20-40 has the highest risk, and often appears in office workers, the elderly due to labor and erratic eating

In addition to prolonged fatigue, people with physical weakness may also experience headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness, muscle aches, loss of concentration, sleep disturbances, psychological changes, depression, and frustration, loss of interest…

  • Cerebral circulatory insufficiency (3): is also known as transient cerebral anemia, occurs suddenly due to lack of blood to feed brain cells, adversely affecting the function of the central nervous system. The disease often tends to repeat many times if not treated definitively.

The disease is common in middle-aged, elderly and intellectual workers.

Headache is the most common and earliest symptom. The pain is diffuse, spasmodic, or localized in the occipital region of the neck – forehead. In addition, the patient also feels dizzy, lightheaded, paresthesia, insomnia, poor sleep, decreased attention, or absent-mindedness; gradual memory loss, easily frustrated, emotional…. When it gets worse, the patient will stutter, lose memory, and potentially have a stroke leading to disability or death.

  • Vestibular disorders (4):

It is a disease that causes an imbalance in posture, causing patients to often experience dizziness, light headedness, tinnitus, nausea, staggered walking, etc. The disease is very recurrent, affecting the work and quality of life.

3/ Tips for enhancing physical and mental health

In addition to getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet and doing moderate exercise, strengthening physical and mental health with herbs is very popular. Below are 3 herbs that help to boost physical and mental strength very effectively.

Ginseng: is a precious and great tonic for the primordial qi, ranked first in the 4 premium medicines of Eastern medicine: Ginseng, Velvet Antler, Cinnamon, and Root of Aconitum(5). Ginsenoside which is the main biologically active ingredient in ginseng has many proven effects (6).

+ Ginseng helps reduce nervous tension, alertness, fatigue, changes mood(7,8)

+ Ginseng has the effect of boosting the body’s immunity. Ginseng helps regulate the body’s immune system against pathogens such as bacteria and viruses (9). Ginseng is a traditional medicine used in the prevention and treatment of acute respiratory infections caused by the SARS-CoV 2 virus (10).

+ Ginseng also has the effect of significantly reducing blood sugar, lowering LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), inhibiting the growth of some types of cancer cells(11,12,13)

  • Ginkgo biloba: helps to activate blood flow, enhance cerebral blood circulation, relieve headaches and improve brain function (14,15).

In addition, ginkgo contains high levels of flavonoids and terpenoids – these are powerful antioxidants that neutralize the harmful effects of free radicals which are culprits that accelerate aging and the development of neurological symptoms and function of other organs (16).

  • Blueberry: is known as the king of natural foods with antioxidant capacity (17). The precious biological active substances in blueberries such as Anthocyanin, Pterostilbene can cross the blood-brain barrier, neutralize free radicals and fight related diseases such as Alzheimer’s, dementia and vascular diseases (18).

A 6-years study in more than 16,000 older adults found that blueberry consumption was associated with a delay of neurological aging by up to 2.5 years (19).

The selection of supplementary products containing the above 3 herbs will have a dual effect – strengthening both the physical and the mental health, effectively repelling fatigue, supporting health, supporting blood circulation and reducing symptoms of cerebral circulatory insufficiency.

It is advisable to choose reputable manufacturing companies with many years of experience to ensure quality products: qualified raw materials, modern factories… and products prepared with appropriate dosages for daily supplementation and safety for the majority of users.
